(Odisha Sports): India’s Avinash Sable qualified for the final of the men’s 3000m steeplechase under dramatic circumstances in an eventful race in the World Athletics Championships in Doha on Tuesday.
He broke his own national record but failed to qualify for the final initially. He clocked 8:25:23 minutes to finish seventh in Heat 3 and 20th overall out of 44 athletes who completed the race. His earlier national record was 8:28.94 set during the Federation Cup earlier this year.
Avinash had to overcome hurdles during his race as he was blocked by reigning Junior World Champion Takele Nigate of Ethiopia and had to virtually climb up the obstacle, thereby losing time. He also had to jump over another competitor as four-five athletes at the rear fell over each other. While he was not included in the final tally, he protested against these incidents which were accepted, leading him to make the cut for the final.
